Tools have a single identification problem: serial numbers fade, get scratched off, or never existed to begin with. Our tags are protected with a thick plastic overlaminate so you won't have these problems. The serial reads on a Code 128 barcode and a QR that resolves to your tool-tracking platform.
Heavy duty labels for tools
Tools are hard on labels. Many housings are textured plastic, tools get dropped and thrown in truck beds, and they pick up grease, dust and solvent. The Strongest tier is built for that: a 12-mil plastic tag with a 3.5-mil permanent adhesive that bonds to textured plastic and powdercoat, sealed under a 6-mil overlaminate.
Because the tag is flexible plastic rather than a metal plate, it conforms to curved surfaces like a drill handle and installs by peel-and-stick. There is nothing to drill and nothing to rivet.
Tool ID tags with barcodes, QR codes and serial numbers
A tool ID tag should give every tool its own number and a fast way to scan it. We print a sequential serial with a Code 128 barcode, a QR code that opens the tool's record in your tracking platform, or both on the same tag. If your tools are already numbered, send the list and we print exactly those numbers. Numbering and variable data are free.
Sizes run from micro-tags as small as 0.25 inch up to large equipment plates, in any shape, with no die charge and no setup fee.
Permanent labels for tools that discourage theft
Visible ownership marking plus a number recorded in your system makes a tool harder to pass off as someone else's. On Stronger and Strongest tiers, add your company name and logo in full color at no charge.
For theft-prone tools, choose a tamper-evident version. The Strongest tier is available as tamper-evident or as a no-residue destructible variant, so a removed label is either obvious or cannot be reused.
Applying tool labels so they stay on
Adhesion starts with a clean surface. Tools that have been in service are often coated in grease and dust, and those should be cleaned with a hot solvent like lacquer thinner and allowed to dry before the label goes on. Our permanent adhesive applies and bonds reliably down to a -10°F install temperature, so a cold shop is not a problem.
Put the label on a flat or gently curved area that does not take direct hits or rub against other tools in the box.
Tool labels for rental fleets
Rental tools and equipment go out with a different customer every time. FAQ: Tool tracking
Will tradespeople peel them off?
Tamper-evident construction leaves a VOID pattern on the tool when peeled. The serial number is also visible through the label and recorded in the tracking system, so removal doesn't make the tool resaleable through normal channels.
Will tool labels stick to textured plastic tool housings?
Yes, on the Strongest tier. Its 3.5-mil permanent adhesive is made for textured and low-surface-energy surfaces, including powdercoat, polyethylene and polypropylene. Stronger and Strong tiers are for smooth surfaces.
Can you number tool tags to match our current inventory?
Yes. Send a spreadsheet with your existing tool numbers, or a starting number, prefix and quantity. Sequential numbering and variable data are free, with no setup fee.
How small can a tool label be?
Strongest-tier tags can be die-cut as small as 0.25 inch, in any shape, with no die charge. If the label carries a QR code, 0.5 inch is the smallest size that reads with a phone camera at 6 inches.
