Permanent Labels for Equipment
What permanent really means: an adhesive that holds, print that stays, and a surface ready for both.
Permanent is the most used and least defined word in labeling. For a label on equipment it means two things: the adhesive does not let go, and the print does not wear off. Both depend on the construction and on the surface the label goes on. Our permanent labels for equipment come in three tiers, and each one is permanent in a different way. This page explains the difference, which surfaces each adhesive bonds to, and how to prepare the surface so the label stays put.

What permanent means in each tier
All three tiers use a permanent adhesive. What changes is how hard the label is to remove and how well the print holds up:
- Strong: 2-mil polyester with a strong permanent acrylic adhesive for smooth, clean, dry surfaces. There is no overlaminate. The thermal-transfer print is fused into the polyester, not on top of it, so the data stays readable for the life of an indoor asset. Rated 2 years outdoors.
- Stronger: 5-mil vinyl with a strong adhesive and a 3-mil clear overlaminate. The print is protected from scratching, UV and water, rated 2 to 5 years outdoors. Stronger labels stay put in service, but they can be removed from hard surfaces without leaving permanent residue.
- Strongest: 12-mil plastic with a 3.5-mil permanent adhesive and a 6-mil overlaminate, rated 5+ years outdoors. Once bonded, a Strongest label is very difficult or impossible to remove without damaging the surface.
- So permanent equipment labels are really two decisions. Does the print need to last, or does the label need to never come off? For most field equipment the answer is both, and that is the Strongest tier.
The adhesive behind permanent labels for equipment
Adhesion is a surface problem first. Smooth painted metal, stainless steel and glass bond well with the Stronger tier. Powdercoat, polyethylene, polypropylene and rough cast metal are low-surface-energy surfaces that repel standard adhesives, and a lot of equipment is finished in exactly those.
The Strongest tier's permanent adhesive uses a high-tack acrylic chemistry rated for low-surface-energy surfaces, and the 12-mil plastic backing gives it enough mass to fully wet out a textured finish during application. Not sure what your surface is? Put a drop of water on it. If the drop beads up instead of spreading out, the surface is low-surface-energy and needs the Strongest tier. The spec builder asks the same question surface by surface and returns the tier and the price.
Surface prep for permanent equipment labels
Most labels that fall off were applied to a dirty surface. A few habits make the bond:
- Clean the surface. Greasy or dirty equipment should be cleaned with a hot solvent like lacquer thinner.
- Let the surface dry completely before the label goes on.
- Apply to a flat or gently curved area that does not take direct hits or rub against other parts.
- Our permanent adhesive applies and bonds reliably down to a -10°F install temperature, so a cold yard is not a problem. The Strong tier needs a smooth, clean, dry, room-temperature surface.
- Every sample pack includes an instruction card for surface prep.
Permanent print: why the overlaminate matters
A label that stays stuck but cannot be read is not permanent. Sunlight fades print, and tools, boots and cleaning scrape it. On the Stronger and Strongest tiers the number, the barcode and the logo sit under a clear overlaminate that absorbs UV, resists scuffing and chemical splash, and keeps the image from being scraped off.
A national HVAC service switched to our labels for rooftop units after a six-month outdoor test against its previous vendor. In their words: "The competitor faded. These did not."
Permanent tags for equipment, and where permanent ends
Stronger and Strongest tiers are rated -40°F to 250°F continuous service, waterproof under standard industrial washdown, and rated against isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and quaternary-ammonium disinfectants.
Three conditions defeat any printed label: continuous heat above 250°F, sustained submersion in solvents stronger than a standard industrial degreaser, and direct flame. Every environment also has its own mix of UV and contaminants, so no tag's lifespan is guaranteed. That is why we send samples before you commit.
Removable or permanent: deciding up front
If equipment is leased, resold or rotated between owners, a label that can come off cleanly may be the better choice, and Stronger-tier labels can be removed from hard surfaces without leaving permanent residue. If the label must never come off, choose Strongest.
If any removal attempt should leave evidence, add tamper-evident material, available in every tier. To see the three constructions side by side, compare the tiers.

FAQ: Permanent equipment labels
Are permanent labels for equipment really permanent?
The Strongest tier's 3.5-mil permanent adhesive is made to stay. Once bonded, the label is very difficult or impossible to remove without damaging the surface. Every environment is different, so no lifespan is guaranteed, but Strongest is rated 5+ years outdoors.
Will permanent labels stick to powdercoat?
The Strongest tier will. Its adhesive is rated for low-surface-energy finishes including powdercoat, polyethylene and polypropylene. The Strong and Stronger tiers are for smooth surfaces.
How do I prepare equipment for a permanent label?
Clean the surface, using a hot solvent like lacquer thinner on greasy or dirty equipment. Let it dry completely, then apply. The adhesive bonds reliably down to a -10°F install temperature.
Can a permanent equipment label be removed?
Stronger-tier labels can be removed from hard surfaces without leaving permanent residue. Strongest-tier labels cannot be removed without damaging the surface, which is the point.
